Raging Wildfire in Hadong Forces Evacuation of 326 Residents; Authorities Mobilize All Available Resources

A significant wildfire in Okjong-myeon, Hadong County, South Korea, has led to the evacuation of 326 residents as authorities struggle to contain the blaze. The fire, which broke out on a mountain in Hoesin-ri, has already impacted approximately 65.1 hectares of land, prompting the activation of a Level 2 wildfire alert.

Despite the deployment of 36 helicopters, 72 pieces of equipment, and 753 personnel during the day, firefighters have been unable to fully extinguish the flames. As of 7 PM, the containment rate stood at 87%. With sunset, aerial operations have been suspended, but 518 personnel remain on the ground to continue battling the fire through the night.

The fire perimeter spans approximately 4.6 kilometers, with about 4 kilometers already brought under control. However, around 0.6 kilometers of active fireline still needs to be addressed. Authorities are focusing on preventing further spread and ensuring the safety of residents.

The blaze is located approximately 3 kilometers from a previous wildfire site in Sancheong, adding to the concerns of local communities. Evacuees from Hoesin and Yangji villages have been directed to shelters at Okcheon Hall and Okjong High School, where 214 individuals are currently housed.

According to initial reports, a man in his 70s sustained burns while attempting to extinguish the fire near its origin. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the wildfire, with preliminary assessments suggesting it may have been sparked by a mowing machine.

“We are mobilizing all available personnel and equipment to transition to a nighttime wildfire suppression system, and we will pay close attention to prevent safety accidents,” stated a Forest Service official.

High-ranking officials have urged all relevant agencies to dedicate every resource to extinguish the wildfire as soon as possible, swiftly evacuate residents in areas threatened by the wildfire, and preemptively establish firebreaks to prevent any casualties.
