Major Wildfire Erupts in Hadong, South Korea: Hundreds Evacuated as Flames Engulf 65 Hectares

A significant wildfire has broken out in Hadong County, South Korea, specifically in the Okjong-myeon area. As of today, the fire has already impacted approximately 65.1 hectares (161 acres), forcing the evacuation of 326 local residents.

The blaze, which started in a mountainous area of Hoesin-ri, Okjong-myeon, prompted the authorities to issue a Level 2 wildfire alert due to the potential for widespread damage. Firefighters have been battling the flames throughout the day and night.

According to the Korea Forest Service, the fire was 87% contained as of 7 PM today. During the day, 36 helicopters, 72 vehicles, and 753 personnel were deployed to combat the fire. However, with nightfall, the aerial support had to be withdrawn, leaving 518 personnel on the ground to continue the fight through the night.

The total fire line stretched approximately 4.6 kilometers, with about 4 kilometers of it already brought under control. The remaining active fire line is estimated to be around 0.6 kilometers.

A representative from the Korea Forest Service stated, “We are mobilizing all available resources and equipment to transition to a night wildfire fighting system and will take precautions to prevent safety accidents.”

The fire’s origin is suspected to be linked to a local resident using a weed whacker, who sustained burns while attempting to extinguish the flames himself. An investigation into the exact cause is underway.

Residents from nearby villages, including Hoesin and Yangji, were evacuated to shelters such as the Okcheon Community Center and Okjong High School. Of the 326 evacuees, 214 are currently staying at these shelters.

With winds of up to 8 meters per second (18 mph) blowing from the north-northeast, the situation remains challenging. Authorities are urging extreme caution and have called for all available resources to be deployed to contain the wildfire as quickly as possible to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of residents and firefighters.
