According to Russian state news agency TASS, Steve Witkoff, a key aide to US President Donald Trump and Special Envoy for the Middle East, arrived in Moscow on the 11th (local time).
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed Witkoff’s arrival to reporters. He added that if a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Witkoff is to take place, it would be announced later.
Earlier, online media outlet Axios reported, citing sources, that Witkoff was scheduled to visit Russia and meet with Putin. Axios noted that this would be the third time Trump has intervened to mediate Ukrainian ceasefire negotiations, raising hopes for a breakthrough in the stalled talks.
A source familiar with the matter told Axios that if there is no progress on the ceasefire by the end of the month, Trump may impose additional sanctions on Russia. Earlier this month, Kirill Dmitriev, the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and a special envoy of Putin, visited the US and met with Witkoff.
Key points:
- Steve Witkoff arrives in Moscow as a special envoy.
- Potential meeting with Putin to be announced later.
- Trump may impose additional sanctions if Ukraine ceasefire talks stall.
