🚨 North Korean Soldiers Briefly Cross Military Demarcation Line (MDL) 🚨

Tensions flared briefly on Tuesday as approximately ten North Korean soldiers crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) before retreating north.

What Happened?

According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), the incident occurred around 5 PM KST in the eastern sector of the DMZ. The South Korean military responded with warning broadcasts and shots, prompting the North Korean soldiers to return north of the MDL.

Official Statement

The JCS stated, “We are closely monitoring North Korean military movements and taking necessary measures in accordance with our operational procedures.”

Background

North Korea has been actively engaged in activities within the DMZ, including constructing roads and barriers and planting landmines. The MDL, established during the 1953 armistice agreement, has suffered damage over time, leading to accidental crossings by North Korean personnel.

A similar incident occurred last June when North Korean soldiers working in the central DMZ crossed the MDL and retreated after warnings from the South Korean military.
