Severe Flooding and Tornado Alerts Hit the Southern US: A State of Emergency 🚨

Hey everyone! 🌧️ Let’s dive into some serious weather affecting the southern United States. Recent heavy rains and flooding have caused significant damage and, tragically, loss of life.

The Impact

Since April 2nd, states like Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky have been hit hard. Sadly, at least 18 people have died due to the extreme weather conditions. Tennessee alone has reported 10 fatalities. 💔 In Kentucky, a heartbreaking incident occurred where a 9-year-old boy was caught in the flood while heading to his school bus. Over in Arkansas, a 5-year-old lost his life when a tree fell on his home.

Even volunteer firefighters are at risk. In Missouri, a 16-year-old tragically died while trying to rescue people from the storm. Wendy Quire, a restaurant manager in Frankfort, Kentucky, mentioned that in her 52 years, she’s never seen flooding this severe.

Rising Waters and Evacuations

The mayor of Frankfort, Rain Wilkerson, noted that the river running through the city is expected to reach up to 49 feet, while it was designed for 51 feet. This has led to evacuation orders in Palmer and Butler, Kentucky, near the rising Licking River. These areas have a history with floods, including a devastating event 30 years ago where 5 people died and 1,000 homes were destroyed when the river reached 50 feet.

Tornado Alerts and Future Forecasts

If that wasn’t enough, parts of Alabama, Georgia, and Florida are under tornado watches. 🌪️ The National Weather Service anticipates that several dozen areas across multiple states will reach a ‘major flood stage,’ potentially submerging structures, roads, bridges, and other critical infrastructure.

A town in northwestern Tennessee, already affected by a levee breach in February, is almost completely underwater after the Obion River overflowed. 🌊
