Police special investigation unit attempts to search the presidential office and official residence concerning obstruction of justice allegations against former President Yoon Seok-yeol. The search is currently stalled due to resistance from the Presidential Security Service.
Details of the Situation ๐
On April 16, 2025, the police’s special investigation team arrived at the presidential office in Yongsan, Seoul, and the official residence in Hannam-dong, presenting a search warrant to the security personnel at approximately 10:13 AM. However, as of 3 PM, the security service has not permitted the execution of the warrant, leading to a standoff.
The police are targeting the Presidential Security Service’s encrypted phone server, offices within the security service, and the security chief’s residence to gather evidence. This evidence aims to prove that former President Yoon and others attempted to obstruct the initial arrest attempt by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) and the police special investigation team on January 3rd.
Why the Hold Up? ๐ค
The exact reason for the security service’s obstruction is not fully clear. Under South Korean law, searches of locations involving military or official secrets require the approval of the person in charge. However, this person must comply with the search unless it poses a significant threat to national interests.
Past Attempts ๐๏ธ
The police have previously attempted to seize the encrypted phone server five times, but were blocked each time by the Deputy Chief of the Presidential Security Service, Kim Seong-hun.
